The Post-Graduation Program of the School of Dentistry of the University of São Paulo (FOUSP) owns 3 concentration areas: Operative Dentistry, Endodontics and Laser in Dentistry. The Program has an 18-member-faculty, 70% of them represented by professors in an exclusive dedication to teaching in a higher education and research (RDIDP). This Program had a “very good” concept from Capes (rated 5) in 2001-2003, 2004-2006, 2007-2009 and 2010-2012 triennia.

Masters courses have a maximum duration of 24 months while Doctorate courses have a 40-month-duration and the Direct Doctorate will not overcome 48 months. Course is based on disciplines that support project and research lines development. Didactic internships are part of students’ formation. When finishing disciplines and the qualification exam, students are able to develop their dissertation (Masters) or thesis (Doctorate) work. Our former students become absolutely trained as Faculty members and/or Researchers in order to perform in an academic environment or in a private initiative.

Professors and their oriented develop works in three research lines, as seen here: Epidemiology, prevention, diagnosis and treatment for dental tissue alterations; Epidemiology, prevention, diagnosis and treatment for pulp and periapical alterations; Effect of laser irradiation on cells, tissues and restorative materials.

Our infrastructure has three research labs available for Post-Graduation projects development: Laboratory for Basic Research “Prof. Dr. Edmir Matson”; Laboratory for Research Applied to Operative Dentistry “Prof. Dr. Lincoln Steagal”; and Special Laboratory for Laser on Dentistry – “Lelo”.

It is expected from students from the Operative Dentistry Program that they develop their course conclusion works (Dissertations and Thesis) and besides that, they perform other works that would become publications in qualified index journals and periodicals and perform work presentations in events and extension actions as well, towards to having an important impact upon society development.

Besides, doctorate students experience the orientation practice as well, performing as co-advisors for Scientific Research students, consolidating their learning for faculty practice. There are many opportunities to perform research internships abroad, as known as “sandwich” scholarship and its obtainment. Furthermore, we have been working on exchange programs from Learning and Research International Institutions, and receiving as well faculty members and researchers from these institutions to minister disciplines and conferences, reinforcing internationalization actions for the Program.

Our Program aims to form ethical and erudite professors and researchers with a critic and accurate view of the literature, being able to purpose applications of the achieved results from research.

This Program is based on a global involvement propose of faculty and students, the enhancement of the knowledge, once obtained from graduation, and the search of new guidelines through objective research.

With a theoretical classes, seminars and research project developments strategy, the student, at the end of the course, will have had contact with many aspects of knowledge in Operative Dentistry, Endodontics and Laser in Dentistry areas, which can make him/her trained to be a future professor, advisor and researcher.

This Program has been evolving in a sense of encouraging quality improvement for scientific production, and as well, the performance of applied researches using cutting-edge technology tested on its research lines. To strengthen this idea, Program has been working on its internationalization through the upcoming of disciplines offered in English language, with participation of foreign professors, narrowing even more its collaboration chains.
